Planing an Effective Electrical Fit-Out for Your Home
Building a new home is an incredibly exciting journey. You get to make decisions on everything from the floor plan to the colour of the walls. But before the plasterboard goes up and hides it all away, there’s one critical system you need to get perfect: your electrical plan.
The wiring in your walls is the central nervous system of your home. It powers your life, from your morning coffee to your evening entertainment. Planning a thorough electrical fit-out for your new home is your one and only chance to get it right without major cost and disruption later.
This guide will help you think like an expert, moving beyond the basic builder’s package to design a home that is safe, convenient, and ready for the future.
Beyond the Builder’s Basic Package: Why a Custom Plan Matters
Most builders offer a standard electrical package that covers the bare minimum required by the National Construction Code. This usually means one light and one or two power points per room. While it’s compliant, it’s rarely sufficient for the way we live today.
“The biggest regret we hear from new homeowners is not putting in enough power points,” notes Charlie Doblo, our lead electrician. “Adding them after the build is more expensive, messy, and complicated. A custom plan lets you place power exactly where you’ll need it.”
The Golden Rule: You Can Never Have Too Many Power Points
Walk through each room of your floor plan and visualise how you will live in the space. Think about where you will place furniture, where you will charge devices, and what appliances you will use. A good rule of thumb is to have a double power point on every wall, but a room-by-room approach is even better.
A Room-by-Room Guide to Your Electrical Plan
Kitchen: The Power-Hungry Hub
- On the Bench: Install multiple double power points along your splashback for your kettle, toaster, and coffee machine.
- Island Bench: Don’t forget outlets here! They’re perfect for laptops or kitchen gadgets.
- In the Pantry: Add a power point inside a walk-in or butler’s pantry for charging cordless vacuums and other small appliances out of sight.
- Dedicated Circuits: Ensure you have separate, dedicated circuits for your high-draw appliances like your oven, induction cooktop, and dishwasher.
Living Room & Media Areas: Entertainment and Ambience
- TV Wall: Plan for at least a quad power point and a data point behind where the TV will sit. This will power the TV, a soundbar, a gaming console, and a media player, while the data point ensures buffer-free streaming.
- Lighting: Consider dimmer switches to control the mood. Plan for accent lighting to highlight artwork.
Bedrooms: Creating a Restful Retreat
- Bedside: Install double power points with integrated USB-A and USB-C ports on both sides of the bed.
- Lighting: Consider two-way switching, so you can turn the main light on or off from both the door and the bed.
Home Office: The Productivity Zone
- Desk Area: Plan for at least a quad power point and a hardwired data point for your computer, printer, and monitors. This guarantees a fast and reliable internet connection for video calls.
Bathrooms & Laundry: Safety and Functionality
- Bathroom: Plan for outlets next to the vanity for hair dryers and electric toothbrushes. Ensure all installations include safety switches, as required by law.
- Laundry: You’ll need points for your washer and dryer, plus an extra for ironing.
Outdoors & Garage: Extending Your Living Space
- Alfresco Area: Install weatherproof power points for BBQs, outdoor fridges, and speakers.
- Garage: Think about power for tools, a beer fridge, and, most importantly, the future.
Future-Proofing Your Investment: What to Plan for Now
A smart electrical fit-out looks ahead. Getting the foundational wiring in place during the build is incredibly cost-effective.
Pre-wiring for an Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger
Even if you don’t own an EV now, you or a future buyer likely will. Running the appropriately sized conduit and wiring from your switchboard to the garage during the build makes a future EV charger installation thousands of dollars cheaper.
Making Your Home Solar Ready
Planning to install solar panels down the track? We can run the necessary cabling and conduit from the roof space to your switchboard location now, simplifying the future installation.
Smart Home and Data Cabling
For ultimate reliability, hardwire your home with data (ethernet) cabling. We recommend running data points to all TV locations, home offices, and even Wi-Fi access points for flawless connectivity throughout the house. This forms the backbone of a true smart home.
The Process: Working With Your Builder and Electrician
The ideal time for an electrical consultation is during the design phase. We can work directly with you and your builder to mark up your floor plans. This electrical plan is then used during the “rough-in” stage—after the frame is up but before the walls are plastered—to run all the cables. The final “fit-out” of switches and outlets happens just before handover.
