Strange Smells Coming From Your A/C? What They Mean

Air conditioning unit emitting unpleasant smells inside a home on the Sunshine Coast

It’s a classic Sunshine Coast afternoon. The humidity is a thick, wet blanket you can’t escape. You head inside, hit the power button on the A/C remote, and wait for that sweet relief…

…But instead of crisp, cool air, you get a face full of a smell.

Maybe it’s musty and damp, like a towel left at the bottom of a bag. Maybe it’s a sharp, acrid smell that makes your nose wrinkle. Or, in the worst-case scenario, maybe it’s the terrifying smell of burning plastic.

Here’s our straight-up, honest advice as your local A/C and electrical team: Your air conditioner should not smell. Ever.

A strange smell from your A/C isn’t just “a thing that happens.” It’s a warning sign. Your nose is telling you that something is wrong—and that “something” could be a risk to your health, your home, or your wallet.

Don’t just spray air freshener and hope for the best. Let’s decode what that smell is, what’s causing it, and what you need to do about it.

Your A/C Smell Decoder: A Guide for Sunshine Coast Homes

We’ve heard (and smelt) them all. Here are the 5 most common smells we get called out for, from the most common to the most dangerous.

1. The Smell: Musty, Mouldy, or “Dirty Socks”

What It Is: This is, without question, the #1 smell we deal with on the Sunshine Coast. That damp, musty odour is exactly what you think it is: mould, mildew, and bacteria.

What’s Happening: Your A/C unit is the perfect “mould farm,” especially here.

  1. It’s Humid: Our sub-tropical air is loaded with moisture.
  2. It’s Damp: Your A/C’s job is to pull that moisture out of the air, which it does by passing it over cold coils. This creates condensation, making the inside of your unit permanently damp.
  3. It’s Dark: The inside of your A/C is a dark, enclosed box.
  4. It’s “Fed”: Your filter traps dust, skin cells, and pollen—all of which are food for mould.

Put it all together (damp + dark + food), and you have a thriving colony of mould and bacteria growing on the filters, the internal coils, and deep in the drain pan. Every time you turn the unit on, it blows those microscopic spores all over your home.

The Risk: This is a major health hazard. According to , mould can cause “allergic reactions such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash.” For people with asthma or compromised immune systems, it’s a serious health risk.

The Fix:

  • Step 1: . If they’re dirty, this is the first culprit.
  • Step 2: If the smell persists after a filter clean, the mould is deeper. It’s on the coils and fan. This is when you need a . We use specialised, pressure-safe equipment and anti-microbial solutions to safely flush the entire system, leaving it hygienic and odour-free.

2. The Smell: Burning Plastic, “Fishy,” or Acrid Smoke

What It Is: DANGER. THIS IS AN ELECTRICAL FAULT.

What’s Happening: This smell has nothing to do with mould and everything to do with a life-threatening electrical problem. That acrid, “hot plastic” or “fishy” smell is the scent of overheating components. It could be:

  • The fan motor is seized and overheating.
  • The insulation on the wires is melting.
  • A component on the main circuit board is shorting out.
  • A loose connection is “arcing” (sparking) and melting the plastic.

The Risk: This is a major fire hazard. This is how house fires start.

The Fix: THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. DO NOT WAIT.

  1. STOP: Immediately turn the air conditioner OFF at the remote.
  2. GO: Go straight to your home’s switchboard.
  3. ISOLATE: Find the circuit breaker labelled “A/C,” “Air Con,” or “Compressor” and switch it to the OFF position.
  4. CALL: Call an immediately.

As we’re both licensed electricians and A/C specialists, this is our specialty. Never, ever just “let it cool down and try again.” The fault is still there, and it’s dangerous.

3. The Smell: Rotten Eggs or Sulphur

What It Is: This smell usually points to two possible (and very different) culprits.

Possibility 1: A Dead Animal It’s a grim reality, but geckos, rats, mice, and even small possums can crawl into the A/C unit (both indoor or outdoor) or the ductwork to seek shelter. If they die in there, the airflow will push the smell of decomposition through your home as soon as you turn it on.

Possibility 2: A Natural Gas Leak This is less common, but critical. The “rotten egg” smell is added to natural gas to make leaks detectable. It’s possible you have a gas leak near your A/C (e.g., from a nearby pipe or appliance), and the A/C is just sucking in that air and distributing it, making you think the smell is coming from the A/C.

The Fix:

  • If you suspect gas: Treat it as an emergency. Turn off the A/C, don’t use any electronics, get everyone out of the house, and call your gas supplier’s emergency line from a safe distance.
  • If it’s likely a dead animal: Call us. We will need to safely open and clean the unit (or ductwork) and remove the source of the problem, then sanitise the system.

4. The Smell: Chemical, “Paint Thinner,” or Sweet Chloroform

What It Is: This is almost always a refrigerant leak.

What’s Happening: Refrigerant (the gas that does the actual cooling) is a chemical that’s normally sealed inside the coils. However, in our coastal Sunshine Coast environment, can eat tiny, microscopic holes (pitting) in the copper or aluminium coils.

When this happens, the gas leaks out. This not only creates a chemical smell but also means your A/C will stop cooling effectively.

The Risk: Refrigerant is a toxic chemical that is heavier than air. Inhaling it can cause dizziness, headaches, and is dangerous to your health.

The Fix:

  1. Turn the A/C off immediately.
  2. Open the windows to ventilate the room.
  3. . This is not a DIY fix. We will need to find the leak, repair it (if possible), and re-gas the system. Often, if salt corrosion is the culprit, the coil will need to be replaced.

5. The Smell: Stale, Dusty, or “Burning Dust”

What It Is: This is the most “normal” smell, but it’s still a sign of a problem.

What’s Happening: You’re smelling a build-up of dust. This is very common when you turn the A/C on for the first time after winter.

  • If you’re in “Cool Mode,” you’re smelling the blast of dry, dusty air that’s been sitting in the unit for months.
  • If you’re in “Heat Mode,” you’re smelling the dust that has settled on the electric heating element literally burning off.

The Risk: It’s a low fire risk, but it’s a high inefficiency and health risk. It means your system is dirty, and it’s blowing dust, pollen, and allergens into your air.

The Fix:

  • Step 1: This is a clear sign you need to . They are full.
  • Step 2: Book a . This “first use” smell is a perfect reminder that your unit is due for its annual professional clean and safety check. As the website notes, a well-maintained unit is far more energy-efficient.

What NOT To Do

  • DON’T just mask it with air freshener. You’re just breathing in mould and chemicals.
  • DON’T spray chemicals or household cleaners into the vents. You will corrode the sensitive electronics and aluminium coils, destroying your unit.
  • DON’T keep running it! Especially if it smells like burning. You’re turning a simple repair into a catastrophic, fire-starting failure.
  • DON’T ignore it. That mould is growing, that leak is getting worse, and that hot wire is getting hotter.

FAQ: Strange A/C Smells

Q: Why does my A/C smell like mould all the time? A: Because your unit is contaminated. Here on the humid Sunshine Coast, it’s not enough to just clean the filters. You likely have a significant build-up of mould on the internal coils and in the drain pan, which requires a professional “hydro-clean” to remove.

Q: Is a musty A/C smell really dangerous? A: Yes, it can be. For healthy individuals, it can cause allergies, headaches, and a runny nose. For anyone with asthma, respiratory issues, or a weak immune system, breathing in mould spores can lead to a serious lung infection or severe asthma attacks.

Q: Why does my A/C smell like a “fishy” or “burning” smell? A: Stop using it immediately and turn it off at the switchboard. This is an electrical fault. The “fishy” smell is often the scent of a specific type of electrical plastic (Bakelite) overheating. It’s an extreme fire hazard.

Q: How much does a professional A/C clean cost on the Sunshine Coast? A: A professional deep clean (or hydro-clean) is more involved than a standard service and usually costs between $150 – $250. This flushes the entire internal unit. A standard service to check filters, gas, and electrics is often less. for an upfront, fixed price.
